Stripey Street Cat song

My partner Rachel Williams and I released a book about a groovy cat stencil in our area (Sydney’s Inner West). It’s been a real niche hit. You can check out the facebook page by searching “The Stripey Street Cat” – I should probably just link it but, hey, I’m 48!

Anyway, I wrote a quick singalong song for a kids’ event we did last year, with one myopic eye on a potential Oscar winning song if we ever got around to animating the story for the big screen. One day.

I offer it to you now, as a sneak preview. Rhythm jaunty and key variable. Make up your own tune, change the words around, but if you know the book and love the stencil, sing with the lungs of a llama*

(*I presume they’re pretty strong, what with altitude and stuff?)

The Stripey Street Cat

Little cat
Stripey cat

Everybody loves
the Stripey street cat

Down the street she comes again
Looking for her little friend
Stripes from head to tail to toe
Stripey cat comes, now watch her go!

Little cat
Stripey cat
Everybody loves
the Stripey street cat

Crossing streets or climbing walls
Stripey street cat never ever falls
Not scared of water or car or pup
Stripey street cat will never give up

Little cat
Stripey cat
Everybody loves
the Stripey street cat

The roads are long and the lanes are winding
A story of looking that leads to finding
She found her friend, and now they’ll play
Stripey street cat, come again some day

Little cat
Stripey cat
Everybody loves
the Stripey street cat

Little cat
Stripey cat
Everybody loves
the Stripey street cat
And that…. My friends….

Is that!
